SHAH ALAM:
Selangor residents might have to brace water rationing for up to three months
longer than expected if the water level at one of the state's most important
dam, Sungai Selangor, fail to reach 55 per cent of its capacity by end of this
month.
Selangor Water Management Authority (LUAS) diretor
Md Khairi Selamat said that the Sg Selangor dam water level stands at 37.31 per
cent as of yesterday despite the consistent rain fall from late March compared
to 100 per cent level last year. "The Sg Selangor dam that supplies water to 60
per cent of Selangor's citizen need to reach 55 per cent of its capacity before
we can finally end the water rationing. However, the low quantity of rain has
slowed down the progress of water level in dams across the state.
"According to a decision made by the state
government in meeting with the state water concessionaires, LUAS and the
National Water Services Commission (SPAN), the water rationing exercise will
only be stopped once the dam's water level reach 55 per cent or 126.5Mm. "The rate of rainfall needed for the water
level to increase and reach such level is about 40.7Mm and the amount of days
for the dams to be filled up is dependant on the rain," he said at LUAS
office in Shah Alam, today. Md Khairi said that if the rainfall does not
improve, the water capacity in Sungai Selangor will hit its critical level at
69Mm in another 71 days and 88 days for the Klang Gates dam.The state water rationing exercise that was
initiated in February had entered its fourth phase early this month and was
expected to end by April 30.
More than 722,032 households has been affected by
the water rationing as of date. When asked whether there is a possibility that the
exercise will enter a 'fifth phase' that might involved more households in the
future, Md Khairi said that the topic has not been discussed yet as the state
government, SPAN, LUAS and the concessionaires involved are concentrating their efforts on restoring water to the state dams through various projects. "We have intensify our efforts in cloud
seeding especially in water catchment areas such as the Sg Selangor and Klang
Gates dams. Earlier this month we have initiated cloud seeding from April 1 to
4th and we will continue with the effort this week," he said. Not denying the possibility of a state-level 'water
emergency', Md Khairi said that if efforts put into increasing the water level
in the state dams fail, LUAS is already in talks with SPAN on the necessary
preparation to face the crisis and coming up with a 'water emergency
plan'. However, he does not disclose the details of the
plan as discussions between the two parties are still in its initial
stage. On the current update of water level at dams across
the state, the Klang Gates dam water capacity is at 53.89 per cent compared to
91.45 per cent last year, Langat dam at 49.47 per cent from 92.53 per cent and
Sg. Tinggi dam at 61.29 per cent from 100 per cent in 2013.Md Khairi added that the unusual dry spell that had
caused the severe decrease of water level at the dams involves a meteorological
cycle that happens every 10 years. "The last time we were hit with such dry
weather is in 2005 and before that 1998," he said. 'When asked whether the state government is aware of
the impending cycle of dry weather that could cause a water shortage, Md Khairi
said that the state government and water agencies are aware of the cycle.Despite so, a long-term plan to address the conflict
was not achieved in time to able the state government to respond to the dry
weather appropriately when it finally hit the state.
